Seven-Foot Bronze Landmark Unveiled Along Carroll Creek

Frederick, MD · October 12, 2026

Puddle-dodging is on the morning docket as light showers roll through the valley. Once the skies brighten, take a walk down to the creek amphitheater to check out the new bronze monument unveiled over the weekend.

The Lead

Hundreds of residents gathered along Carroll Creek on Sunday afternoon to unveil a permanent seven-foot bronze tribute honoring former Mayor and State Senator Ron Young. Positioned at the outdoor amphitheater, the statue by Maryland sculptor Antonio Tobias Mendez commemorates the leadership that reshaped the downtown core after the devastating 1976 flood. While federal plans initially favored an austere concrete drainage culvert, Young championed converting the floodway into a walkable linear canal lined with gardens, pedestrian bridges, and cultural gathering spaces. The surrounding plaza now features permanent interpretive wayside exhibits that detail the decades-long public works campaign and its community partners. Visitors strolling the brick promenade this week can find the sculpture perched beside the amphitheater steps, looking out across the water.

Spotlight & Story

  • Shab Row
    • Before boutique windows lined East Street, 19th-century artisans repaired stagecoaches heading west. Later neglect earned the weathered cottages a blunt neighborhood moniker: "shabby". Businessman Bert Anderson rescued the enclave in the 1970s, rebuilding with salvaged brick while keeping the honest name intact.
