Up to $9,000 an Acre to Plant New Forests

Frederick, MD · October 10, 2026

Smells of spiced cider and street food are already drifting along the creek path this morning. You have plenty of reasons to get outside before the afternoon chill settles in.

The Lead

Frederick County is dramatically expanding its Creek ReLeaf program, rolling out more than $1.5 million in fresh state and federal grants to plant permanent native woodlands on private acreage. Landowners holding at least two contiguous acres of open or underused ground can earn up to $9,000 per acre to convert their fields into protected forest. Beyond the cash payment, the county supplies the saplings, organizes the planting crews, and manages professional maintenance across each grove's first five years, all while property owners keep their land and recreational access.

Since launching in 2017, the initiative has seeded over 650 acres of trees, with new funds earmarked for projects like transforming a defunct golf course near Lake Linganore. Applications remain open through December 31, with county arborists hosting virtual info sessions for interested property owners through November.
