Ed McClain Road Closes Today Through Spring — Detour Routes Inside

Frederick, MD · October 5, 2026

Keep an eye out for orange detour barrels if your morning route cuts through Monrovia. Crews are closing off Ed McClain Road early today to reshape the corridor, so allow an extra few minutes to reach the highway.

The Lead

Drivers navigating southeastern Frederick County will need a fresh route this morning as county highway contractors officially shut down a stretch of Ed McClain Road in Monrovia. The closure, spanning the corridor between Emerald Crown Drive and 4639 Ed McClain Road, makes way for the long-planned Monrovia East-West Connector. Kibler Construction crews are realigning the existing two-lane roadway and carving out a new 0.35-mile link designed to route northbound traffic smoothly onto Green Valley Road (MD 75), bypassing older pinch points.

Signed detours route motorists along Fingerboard Road (MD 80) and Green Valley Road, but neighborhood cut-throughs will feel the squeeze during rush hour. County project managers plan to keep the work zone blocked until spring 2027, when the finished connector opens for regional traffic.
