Final Plans Approved for New West-Side Library Branch

Frederick, MD · September 13, 2026

Market Street is quiet again after yesterday’s festival rush, but between neighborhood tours and afternoon dance sessions, Sunday has plenty of easy rhythms lined up.

The Lead

Plans for the long-sought West Frederick Branch Library cleared a decisive hurdle this month after city planners approved the final site layout for 501 McCain Drive. Designed to replace a section of Hillcrest Park along the Golden Mile, the 15,420-square-foot facility will give the city’s dense western neighborhoods their first dedicated public library branch, complete with study rooms, technology labs, and bilingual family programming. For decades, west-side patrons have made the trek to the C. Burr Artz branch downtown. The approved package resolved parking variances to accommodate 91 vehicles while preserving neighborhood walking connections to nearby schools. Next up, architects and county staff will wrap up construction documents this winter before putting the project out to bid next spring.
