Frederick County took a major step toward modernizing senior services this week, purchasing 13.4 acres from the Hope Family to build the future Brunswick 50+ Community Center. The purchase coincides with the release of the county's new 50+ Community Center Feasibility Study, which projects that one in five local residents will be 65 or older by 2035. Most current senior programs operate out of crowded, retrofitted municipal spaces; the Brunswick site will become the county’s first purpose-built, stand-alone senior center. The study recommends adopting this model countywide, proposing future facilities in Walkersville, Urbana, and the urban core. County Executive Jessica Fitzwater noted that purpose-built centers provide the accessibility and programming modern seniors require.
