New J-Turns and Safety Upgrades Heading to US 15

Frederick, MD · August 21, 2026

Crews are moving heavy equipment along Route 15 this morning, so budget an extra five minutes if heading north toward Auburn Road.

The Lead

State highway officials have initiated a $10.4 million safety reconstruction along Route 15 at the Auburn and Angleberger Road intersection. The project replaces the existing crossover with a new J-turn configuration, designed to reduce severe right-angle crashes by preventing side-street traffic from crossing four lanes of highway traffic at once.

Instead, drivers turning from Angleberger Road will turn right onto northbound Route 15 and use a dedicated U-turn lane located 3,000 feet north. Construction crews will also install automated speed enforcement devices set to the 55 mph speed limit throughout the work zone. Commuters can expect temporary lane shifts and active equipment in the area over the coming months.
