Rolling out the seed drills for the final fall wheat acreage shares the morning quiet with overcast skies. Take advantage of the mild afternoon to tune up winter gear or run errands down Highway 95 before frost tightens its grip.

The Lead

Waterfowl hunters setting sights on Winchester Lake this fall will need to plan ahead and secure a reservation before heading into the reeds. Idaho Fish and Game and Winchester Lake State Park have opened an advance registration system governing all waterfowl hunting on the water, designating six specific hunting locations to balance recreational access with park safety.

Each designated blind allows a maximum of four hunters, and participants must remain strictly within their reserved perimeter. State park fee-area shorelines remain entirely off-limits to hunting, and motorized access across the banks is barred, meaning parties must haul their decoys and temporary blinds in on foot or by paddle. Permanent structures are not permitted, requiring all gear to be cleared at the end of each outing. Reservations are active now through the regional Fish and Game portal.
