Just across the county line in Nezperce, an inventive public-works project is turning wastewater compliance into a working farm. For years, the city struggled to meet strict environmental discharge limits for treated effluent flowing into Long Hollow Creek. Instead of pouring tax revenue into perpetual pipeline fixes, the city secured an $11.8 million federal grant package to construct modern treatment lagoons coupled with a 75-acre agricultural reuse field.
Contractors from Crea Construction are wrapping up installation of the field’s automated sprinkler network ahead of an October finish, coming in under budget. Once final testing concludes, the city will seed the acreage with alfalfa, pump treated irrigation water across the stand, and sell the harvested hay to fund ongoing maintenance at the lagoon facility.
