Heavy Machinery Meets Thick Mud at Butterworth Lagoon

The thick river mist should burn off by midday, but freeing up the heavy gear stuck over at the park lagoon will take some doing today.

The Lead

A routine dredging operation at Butterworth Park turned into a heavy-duty extraction mission Monday when an excavator sank deep into the mud of Sugar Creek. The city contracted Langman Construction to clear roughly 24,000 cubic yards of accumulated silt and sediment from the waterway and lagoon to improve stormwater drainage across the basin. While working near the shoreline, the heavy rig broke through soft bank material and became mired up to its tracks. Fortunately, no operators were hurt and no fluids leaked into the creek. City staff confirmed that recovery specialists will bring in stabilizing mats and secondary winches today to ease the tracked machine back to solid ground. Once the rig is freed and bank turf assessed, crews will recalibrate their reach before resuming channel clearing.
