East Moline Fire Chief Robert DeFrance enacted an immediate open burn ban across the city Sunday evening, prompted by regional Red Flag conditions and unseasonably dry autumn air. Under the order, all outdoor burning is prohibited within city limits until further notice. That restriction includes backyard fire pits, chimineas, recreational brush piles, and yard debris clearing.
Fire officials noted that low relative humidity combined with gusty winds creates an elevated risk of runaway blazes, even from small embers in residential neighborhoods. The department will evaluate daily moisture and wind readings from the National Weather Service, lifting the restrictions once sustained humidity returns to the Quad Cities. For now, yard cleanup remains limited to standard brown-bag curbside collection.
