Dense morning fog is hugging the valley floor and foothills early today, though mild sunshine will take over once the mist burns off. Take it slow along Highway 78 on your morning commute, and enjoy the easy seventy-degree warmth rolling in this afternoon.

The Lead

East Alabama’s rugged ridgelines take the national stage early Saturday as the nineteenth annual Pinhoti 100 Trail Race launches from Pine Glen Campground. The grueling point-to-point course stretches just over one hundred miles through the Talladega National Forest, climbing roughly fourteen thousand vertical feet across the shoulder of Mount Cheaha before winding down to Lake Howard in Sylacauga.

Because a finish qualifies runners for the prestigious Western States 100 lottery, the race attracts elite endurance athletes and support crews from across the country into our backyard. For residents near the mountain, expect busier trailheads and support van traffic along forest service roads through Sunday. Volunteer-run aid stations are taking shape today, ready for the lead pack’s arrival before dawn on Sunday.
