Modern Walk-Through Check-Ins Arrive at Tug Valley ARH

Canada, KY · October 7, 2026

Chilly valley air gives way to eighty-degree afternoon sunshine today, giving us one of our warmest October afternoons of the week.

The Lead

Patients and visitors arriving at Tug Valley ARH Regional Medical Center in South Williamson will notice a modern checkpoint step at the front doors. Appalachian Regional Healthcare completed installation of advanced walk-through security scanners on Tuesday as part of a systemwide, multimillion-dollar safety rollout.

Unlike traditional airport metal detectors, the new upright units allow most people to stroll through at normal speed without having to empty pockets, remove belts, or set aside everyday personal items. Security personnel will conduct secondary bag checks only when an alert sounds for concealed firearms, blades, or other banned items.

The Tug Valley installation marks one of the network's first regional rollouts alongside facilities in Beckley and Summers County. Hospital staff are completing operational training, with the new entrances welcoming the public under the updated safety protocol throughout the week.
