New Grants Open to Help Stock Local Food Pantries

Canada, KY · October 3, 2026

Pencil in an extra layer before heading out the door today — intermittent autumn showers are setting in across the valley, but there is still plenty happening under cover.

The Lead

The Pikeville Community Foundation has opened its 2027 Food Security Grant cycle, making funding available to community non-profits and volunteer meal networks operating throughout Pike County. Grants will range from $2,500 to $8,000, aimed squarely at programs that distribute groceries, backpack meals, and pantry boxes to families, children, and elderly residents facing rising grocery bills.

Foundation leaders noted that recent regional data shows roughly one in four children and one in eight seniors in Kentucky encounter food hardship during the year. In past cycles, similar funding supported grassroots efforts like church pantries, backpack lunch initiatives, and mobile food boxes across rural hollows. Nonprofits have through December 1 to submit their proposals through the foundation's online portal, with grant distributions scheduled to roll out ahead of the spring.
