Turn That Old Broken Freezer into Cash Before Friday

Canada, KY · October 1, 2026

Rumbling pickup trucks hauling rusted white refrigerators down the hollow are a sure sign that autumn cleanup has arrived. If you have an old stove or dead chest freezer sitting behind the barn, today is the time to load it up.

The Lead

The Pike County Conservation District's annual appliance buyback is in full swing across the county through Friday, offering residents cash incentives to clear bulky scrap metal out of their yards and barns. Crews took in more than 400 discarded appliances in a single day this week as mobile collection trailers rotated through valley communities, including nearby stops at Belfry and Phelps.

Funded by conservation grants, the initiative pays haulers per qualifying item—such as refrigerators, freezers, cookstoves, and water heaters—to prevent heavy white goods from ending up dumped down steep hollows or washing into waterways during high-water events. For rural landowners, it solves the recurring headache of hauling unwieldy metal to distant landfills. Collection trailers operate daily through Friday afternoon, with scrap metal hauled directly to regional recyclers as soon as trailers reach capacity.
