A major research milestone landed in the mountains this week as University of Pikeville molecular biology professor Dr. Kevin Wang secured a $351,311 grant from the National Institutes of Health. Supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the 33-month project focuses on using plants to rapidly produce nonglycosylated reteplase, an essential clot-busting drug administered during acute heart attacks.
Because traditional manufacturing of these critical thrombolytics remains costly and logistically demanding, discovering an efficient, plant-based production method could substantially reduce manufacturing expenses and widen emergency access. Notably, this award represents the very first NIH research grant awarded directly to an undergraduate faculty member at the university. Dr. Wang’s laboratory team will soon begin cultivating test batches on campus, creating hands-on research opportunities for regional students while targeting an affordable solution for emergency cardiac care.
