New Trail Markers Ready for Your Sunday Walk

Canada, KY · May 17, 2026

The mist is hanging low over the ridges this morning, but it’s a perfect day for a slow start. If you’re heading out for a stroll after church, you’ll notice the new mile markers are finally in place along the creek.

📰 The Lead

Volunteers spent most of Saturday afternoon finishing the installation of new interpretive signage and distance markers along the Pond Creek walking path. This project, funded by a small regional heritage grant, aims to highlight the deep coal mining history of our valley while providing a safer, more structured route for residents' daily exercise.

The markers are placed at quarter-mile intervals and feature short anecdotes about the families who settled this stretch of the county. While the path has always been a local favorite, the new signage helps formalize the trail for the next generation. The committee is already looking ahead to mid-summer, with plans to install two additional benches near the old bridge crossing to give walkers a place to rest in the shade.

📸 Spotlight & Story

  • The Dinner Bell Tradition
    • Before cell service reached deep into the hollows, many families in the valley relied on iron dinner bells to call kids home from the creek. A few of these original bells still hang on porches along the main road, preserved as heavy, rusted links to a louder, analog past.
