Listen for the rumble along the Route 1A corridor early this morning—the overnight paving crews are packing up their cones just in time for the sunrise commute. Grab a second cup of coffee and settle in; there is plenty of local ground to cover before midday.

The Lead

Nighttime drivers heading toward the coast will soon get a smoother run through the Route 1A corridor. The Maine Department of Transportation is finishing up the final shifts of its $2.67 million highway preservation paving project spanning nearly three miles between Brewer and Holden.

Since late summer, crews have been milling and resurfacing travel and center turn lanes from the railroad overpass near Interstate 395 out past Copeland Hill Road. While daytime utility adjustments wrapped up earlier this month, contractors maintained alternating lane closures overnight to keep daytime traffic moving along the busy artery.

Night paving operations conclude for the season this Friday, October 23, leaving final line striping and shoulder work as the last items before cold weather sets in.
