Preseason sports often center on competition, but yesterday at Heddericg Field, regional rivalries took a backseat to community solidarity. Seven area high school field hockey programs — including Brewer, Old Town, Hampden Academy, Hermon, Nokomis, Dexter, and Orono — converged on the turf for a joint play day to support Old Town High School Athletic Administrator Jeremy Bousquet in his battle with cancer.
Fans packed the bleachers and passed donation buckets along the sidelines, ultimately raising nearly $2,000 for Bousquet and his family. Players from opposing squads sported coordinated accessories and stood side by side in support throughout the games. Spectators praised the energetic, uplifting atmosphere on the field. Area coaches are already discussing making the late-August exhibition an enduring annual tradition.
