Savor that extra hour from the overnight clock reset. With festival altars and neighborhood art tours taking over the sidewalks, daylight will vanish fast.

The Lead

For the first time since completing its multi-year, $25 million expansion, the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center hosts its signature community gathering today along Lady Bird Lake. The 19th annual Día de los Muertos celebration transforms the expanded campus at 600 River Street into a gathering space of remembrance, featuring community ofrendas, artisan booths, live music, and Aztec dancing across the redesigned central zócalo. The overhaul added new youth classrooms, dance and visual art studios, and an expansive shade canopy inspired by papel picado. For East Austin and Rainey Street neighbors navigating rapid skyline changes, seeing the grounds active again re-anchors the lakeside corridor in longstanding grassroots tradition. Festivities run from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM before the center shifts on Tuesday to serve as a designated downtown polling location.
