With over half of the city living in rental units, Austin City Council has moved to close a long-standing loophole in tenant protections. Council members voted unanimously to adopt a resolution establishing formal mold inspection, remediation, and reporting standards for residential rentals across town. Central Texas humidity and recurring plumbing issues have historically left renters with little municipal backing when persistent moisture issues appear behind drywall or inside air ventilation ducts. The resolution, introduced by District 2 Council Member Vanessa Fuentes, directs City Manager T.C. Broadnax to craft enforceable amendments to the city’s housing maintenance code while updating bilingual public education on health risks and tenant rights. Broadnax and the Code Department will return with drafted ordinance language and staffing proposals for council review later this fall.
