On Monday, city officials and trail advocates officially opened the long-awaited Shoal Creek Trail "Middle Gap" project, completing a critical missing link in Central Austin's urban trail network. For years, cyclists and pedestrians following Shoal Creek were forced off the continuous greenway path and onto busy city streets near 38th Street. The newly finished section introduces a dedicated off-street multi-use trail, protected pedestrian crossings, and updated stormwater drainage designed to handle heavy flash flooding along the creek bed. By closing this gap, the city establishes an uninterrupted, non-motorized route stretching from Lady Bird Lake up into Allandale. Crews will wrap up final native plantings along the bank through early September, but foot and bike traffic can move through the restored corridor starting today.
