LGBTQ+ Historical Marker Dedicated Downtown + Weekend Highlights

Austin, TX · August 22, 2026

Expect shimmering pavement and triple-digit heat by early afternoon, but plenty of shade and live music are waiting around town today.

The Lead

A new historic marker now stands at Fourth and Colorado streets, commemorating decades of LGBTQ+ culture and nightlife in the city's urban core. Unveiled Friday morning by municipal leaders and members of the city's LGBTQ+ Quality of Life Advisory Commission, the brick-and-bronze monument features a bronze plaque titled "As Queer As You Want To Be".

The installation follows the removal of the neighborhood's rainbow crosswalks under state transport directives. Rather than letting the district's history fade, community advocates spent three years navigating municipal landmark reviews to ensure the area's social legacy was permanently recorded in stone and metal.

Commissioners hope the dedication paves the way for similar historic preservation projects across other culturally significant corridors.
