Settle Street Assessments by Oct. 31 to Skip the Interest
Austin, MN · October 20, 2026
A sharp 39-degree bite greeting you at the door melts away under wall-to-wall sunshine this afternoon. If you have younger tinkerers in tow, keep an eye out for flying gourds over at the library later today.
The Lead
The Austin City Council reviewed the annual special assessment rolls Monday evening, giving property owners until October 31 to prepay municipal project balances before charges are certified to Mower County tax rolls. The assessments cover improvements completed during this year's public works season, including street reconstruction, concrete curb replacement, sidewalk repairs, and unpaid municipal utility bills. While the city routinely bonds for major construction, state statute permits property owners to pay their individual assessments upfront to avoid multi-year interest fees, which are added when balances transfer to November property tax statements. Homeowners who had curb or pavement work completed outside their door this summer can look up parcel numbers and balances through the city finance department. Payments can be submitted by mail, online, or in person at the City Hall cashier counter through the end of next week.
