Fall Lantern Hikes Kick Off Along the Nature Trails Tonight

Austin, MN · October 2, 2026

Dusk brings a brisk drop into the 40s tonight, just in time to bundle up for lantern walks through the woods and live music downtown.

The Lead

Fall tradition returns to the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center tonight as the 43rd Annual Halloween Warm-Up transforms the dark woods into Alice’s Wonderland. Staged in partnership with Matchbox Children's Theatre, the evening event guides small groups along forty-five-minute trail hikes punctuated by costumed performers, before finishing inside the interpretive center over warm apple cider and fresh treats.

Designed for ages four through eleven but drawing entire families, the walks depart every ten minutes between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM both tonight and Saturday. Staff also made two accessible, all-terrain track chairs available for the earliest slots each evening to ensure every child can join the trail trek. With trail slots capped to maintain an unhurried forest stroll, families aiming to snag one of the remaining tour times can reserve online through the city parks catalog before heading to the Ruby Rupner Auditorium check-in.
