Country Road Dedication Today Honors Valley Educators
Austin, CO · October 20, 2026
Signs go up on Read Mesa just after lunch today to honor the teachers who shaped this valley. It makes a fine excuse to slow down along the bench before the afternoon warmth slips away.
The Lead
A stretch of 2075 Road near the old school grounds on Read Mesa gains a new identity this afternoon as county and school leaders dedicate the roadway to the valley's rural educators. Starting at 1:15 PM outside the former district administration building, neighbors and retired staff will gather to unveil new signage honoring the men and women who taught generations of farm families in one-room and consolidated schoolhouses. Read’s fertile bench, perched just northwest of town, long served as an educational hub before valley districts merged. The ceremony highlights how those early classroom teachers anchored community life during the area's agricultural boom. Attendees can share personal memories and view historical photographs inside the grounds immediately following the unveiling.

Spotlight & Story
- Orchard City
- Incorporated in 1912 to fund a mountain-water pipeline, the municipality took its title from the vast commercial fruit orchards framing the valley. Austin residents only agreed to annex in 1915 after failing to convince neighbors to rename the entire town Austin instead.
