Historic Wagon Rides and Sunset Lake Floats Today

Austin, CO · August 29, 2026

A touch of high-desert cloud cover greets the valley this Saturday morning. Plenty of good reasons to head out once the sun breaks through, from morning markets to evening wagon rides.

The Lead

Cedaredge swings open the boardwalks of Pioneer Town tonight from 4:00 to 8:00 PM for its annual Night on the Town, the Surface Creek Valley's signature late-summer heritage gathering. The event turns the five-acre historical village into an active block party, featuring horse-drawn wagon rides, a communal chili feed, a silent auction, and live performances by cowboy poet Terry Nash inside the historic Chapel of the Cross.

Admission is free to the public, with proceeds from supper sales and auction bids directly supporting the ongoing preservation of more than twenty pioneer-era buildings, from vintage print shops to the old jailhouse. Beyond raising maintenance funds for rural artifacts, the evening acts as an informal homecoming before the busy autumn harvest kicks into high gear. Festivities get underway at four o'clock along South Grand Mesa Drive.
