Fair Week Begins: Project Drop-Offs Open This Morning

Arrey, NM · October 6, 2026

Truck beds along the valley are riding a little heavier this morning as project boards, canned jams, and livestock trailers head north for fair check-in.

The Lead

The fairgrounds in Truth or Consequences officially open their gates this morning for entry drop-offs, marking the start of the 2026 Sierra County Fair. For valley farm families and 4-H youths who spent the summer tending livestock or finishing craft and home-science projects, today begins the whirlwind: indoor exhibits—from preserved chile and baked goods to agricultural mechanics—are accepted from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, alongside rabbit check-ins throughout the afternoon. Livestock weigh-ins follow Wednesday morning, setting up Thursday's official public opening and the start of competitive showmanship. While judging happens behind closed doors tomorrow afternoon, the barns will already be humming as young exhibitors get animals settled into their pens. The public gets its first look at the ribbon winners when the exhibit buildings open wide on Thursday morning.
