Miniature Goats Clear the Way for a Secret Garden
Arlington, MA · October 20, 2026
A sharp morning chill is clinging to the bike path, but clear skies and an evening of live poetry at the library will easily warm things up.
The Lead
A small, four-legged landscaping crew just wrapped up a month of heavy lifting near Spy Pond. Over the past four weeks, ten Nigerian Dwarf goats from Lexington’s Goodwin Hill Goat Farm grazed a half-acre, town-owned parcel at 21 Pond Lane to clear thick overgrowth of invasive knotweed and bittersweet.
Organized through Arlington’s recycling coordinator and former environmental planner, the targeted grazing offered a chemical-free alternative to clearing stubborn weeds that cannot be tossed into standard curbside yard collection. Goatherder Halé Sofia Schatz ferried the bell-collared goats daily in the back of her station wagon, giving the voracious foragers run of the lot. With the dense brush now stripped back to the soil, town planners and neighborhood volunteers are preparing site evaluations to map out paths and native plantings for a community-envisioned pocket garden.
