Dense fog rests low over the Cold River this morning, but clearing skies promise a bright autumn afternoon across the hills.

The Lead

The push to protect the northern shoreline of Lake Warren gained major momentum over the weekend, as conservation partners crossed the halfway mark in their drive to preserve a vulnerable 16-acre wooded peninsula across from Pine Island. When the waterfront parcel went up for sale with marketing pitched at private subdivision and vacation home lots, neighboring residents and Kroka Expeditions stepped in to safeguard the shoreline.

Partnering with the Monadnock Conservancy and the Lake Warren Preservation Association, organizers have secured more than $439,000 in pledges and private donations toward the acquisition. Protecting the parcel keeps nearly a mile and a half of lakefront naturally intact, shielding wildlife corridors and preventing runoff into one of the town's primary recreational waters. With the purchase agreement now in place, volunteer organizers turn their attention to closing the remaining funding gap before winter freezes the lake.
