Route 123A Retaining Wall Project Enters Final Paving Stretch

Alstead, NH · October 5, 2026

Heavy river mist is lingering over the valley floor this morning. Give yourself an extra few minutes on the morning drive before the fog burns off into afternoon sunshine.

The Lead

Crews from Neil H. Daniels, Inc. are entering the home stretch on the $2.98 million Route 123A reconstruction project adjacent to the Vilas Pool Dam. The comprehensive undertaking, funded through the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, aims to permanently repair severe embankment washouts and erosion stemming from past torrential summer flooding along the Cold River. Workers are putting final touches on a new cast-in-place concrete retaining wall, upgrading roadside drainage culverts, and preparing the 1,000-foot roadway segment for final grading and fresh guardrails. Alternating one-lane traffic remains in effect under flagger control, and town officials remind residents that Vilas Pool Park stays closed to the public for safety while heavy equipment occupies the corridor. State engineers are targeting complete roadway reopening by November 20 before regional asphalt plants shut down for the season.
