Restoring Access at Island Grove’s Historic Footbridge

Abington, MA · October 11, 2026

Steady rain is drumming on the roofboards early today, though that just means pulling on boots before tracking down coffee and classic cars.

The Lead

Town planners take the next formal step Tuesday toward restoring one of the community's signature landmarks when the Conservation Commission reviews plans for Island Grove’s historic Memorial Bridge.

The Planning Department has filed a Notice of Intent seeking environmental approval for structural preservation repairs and long-planned ADA accessibility improvements across the span. Dedicated in 1912 alongside the entrance archway, the footbridge serves as the primary pedestrian gateway into the grove, but settling masonry and uneven decking have posed challenges for strollers and wheelchairs.

Backed by local Community Preservation Act funds and a $1 million federal appropriation, the project recently completed historical design reviews. Tuesday’s public hearing at Town Hall will address shoreline wetland protections, paving the way for the town to finalize construction bids.
