Long designated as one of the community's three most crash-prone crossings, the intersection of Hancock and Chestnut Streets is entering the home stretch of state review. MassDOT's fully funded $8.4 million redesign replaces the awkward stop-sign configuration with a modern, single-lane roundabout featuring splitter islands, pedestrian refuge zones, and updated ADA granite walkways.
The town recently lowered Hancock Street’s speed limit to 25 mph through designated safety zone bylaws, but engineers determined physical roadway geometry was essential to curtail high-speed cut-through collisions. In addition to calming traffic speeds from commuter bypasses, the design regrades southern sightlines along Hancock to eliminate blind spots for turning vehicles. The state Transportation Improvement Program recently finalized full design submissions, clearing local rights-of-way ahead of utility relocation and regional bidding.
